Edgar

Edgar was a 17 year old male initially diagnosed with optic glioma in 2009 who died of worsening MDS symptoms and complications. Edgar was a selfless young man. He always thought of his family before himself. A true gentleman despite his young years of life. His mother was by his side every second since his last admission. The last 5 months of his life were the toughest as symptoms of his disease worsened. In the lowest of times, his family and faith were Edgar's grounding force. His family misses his dearly. Edgar is forever with us.

Shai

Shai was a spunky, lovable, playful 4 year old boy who was diagnosed with an aggressive brain tumor, DIPG, in September of 2019. After treatment, his single mom decided to take him on adventures to make important memories. Together, they went to visit family and friends with the goal of everyone having time with Shai for them to remember him. One year after his diagnosis, Shai died in his mother's loving care, at home, in peace. Shai will be incredibly missed by all the people that were lucky enough to know him. Shai is forever with us.

Juan Diego

Juan Diego was diagnosed in December of 2019. His treatment for T Cell Lymphoma had many complications and despite his prognosis, he was a kind, strong, resilient, and compassionate young man. His death has left an immense and immeasurable loss to his parents, youngest brother, and his grandmother. Juan Diego will always be remembered at Miller Children’s Hospital for his incredible spirit. He is forever with us.

Kairi

Kairi was both sassy and sweet, and our whole team fell in love with her during her lengthy hospitalization. She was a talented artist, and we treasured the portrait drawings of nursing staff she had posted on her door (with a loving message thanking healthcare heroes, aww.) She went through this grueling journey in her own way- not wanting staff to hover over her, definitely not wanting to be called "Miss Kairi," and definitely, definitely not wanting a "sad bagel" (ie a plain bagel with nothing on it.) We are holding her Mom Kim, her stepdad Albert, and her siblings Kaylene and Adam in our thoughts and hearts during this most difficult time, and it was truly an honor to be part of her care.

Samantha was diagnosed with Synovial Cell Sarcoma in 2015 and showed tremendous bravery throughout her treatment journey. She underwent numerous treatments and Phase 1 trials without ever complaining. Samantha had a smile that could light up a room and was the biggest Justin Bieber fan you will ever meet. Memories of her sending her mother to get her favorite snacks and the love she had for her family will never be forgotten.

Sweet Maria was only 11 months old when she became an angel. Much of Maria's life was battling cancer at Miller Children’s Hospital in Long Beach. Maria spent the last 3 months of her life in the hospital. This was Maria’s parents only child together and Maria had an older brother from her mother’s side who was 17. She was the light in her parents’ lives and will forever be remembered as their little angel.

Brysen was a 10 year old boy who was well known to UCLA. In April of 2019, Brysen underwent a heart transplant at UCLA. Prior to receiving this transplant, Brysen nearly died. The family has had a long battle fighting for Brysen's life for several years.

This past week we were able to help the family of sweet Dominic who gained his angel wings at just 7 years old after fighting DIPG. Dominic loved to draw, build LEGOs, tell jokes, and play with his little brother and cousins. He was a great source of joy for all those who knew him, including his medical team. Dominic is greatly missed and will forever be with us!

Liam was a healthy 2-year-old boy before he was diagnosed with brain cancer on July 28th, 2019, when his parents lives changed forever. Liam endured 3 rounds of chemo after which doctors found that his tumor which was diagnosed as a grade 4 Histone 3.3 Mutated Glioblastoma was continuing to grow and his chances of survival went from 50% to 10%.
